Dean Reed: "Marxism is a political philosophy, an economical philosophy where we believe that we can change society, to make it better for human beings. That we are not trapped in a society through metaphysical means, where the society changes by itself and we are trapped, as in jail, and we have to put up with these conditions. For example, the church in South America believes not in a Marxist viewpoint but in a metaphysical viewpoint. Meaning that the world is made, so you are made poor and must accept that you are poor. And if you are good and accept this then you’ll go to heaven in the end. A Marxist says, ‚No, we can change conditions, we can better the conditions of the world. We don’t have to wait for God to do it. We can do it. Human beings can do it, together as masses, the working people.‘ <\/p>\n

Permit me to say that Dean was an independent socialist. He thought that Communism was an "ideal", and did not really exist. He was also an internationalist, and what I would call a multi-cultural man.
His philosophy did change over the years. After our visit to Nicaragua in 1984 and meetings with some of the proponents of Liberation Theology, he began to question and change some of his attitudes about the Church in South America.
As far as his activities in the Eastern Bloc, he did fight to "try to make socialism, a better socialism". These battles were not covered in the press. Otherwise headlines in Moscow might have read "Dean Reed threatens to cancel all performances in USSR if he is not permitted to sing ‚My Yiddisha Mama‘ and ‚Hawa Nagila‘ in concerts" and he won that battle. Or in Prague you might have seen a headline "Dean Reed exposes music payoffs and bribes CZ musicians must pay to travel", and he lost that battle and was banned from CZ performances for 3 years. During his last years in the GDR he was rocking the chairs of some very high officials. <\/p>\n

Dovolte mi \u0159\u00edci, \u017ee Dean byl nez\u00e1visl\u00fd socialista. M\u011bl n\u00e1zor, \u017ee komunismus byl "ide\u00e1l", a re\u00e1ln\u011b neexistoval. Byl tak\u00e9 internacionalista, a co chci \u0159\u00edci, multikulturn\u00ed mu\u017e.
Jeho filosofie doznala zm\u011bny za ty roky. Po na\u0161\u00ed n\u00e1v\u0161t\u011bv\u011b v Nikaragui v roce 1984 a setk\u00e1n\u00ed s n\u011bkter\u00fdmi stoupenci teologie osvobozen\u00ed, za\u010dal se pt\u00e1t a m\u011bnit n\u011bkter\u00e9 ze sv\u00fdch postoj\u016f o c\u00edrkvi v Ji\u017en\u00ed Americe.
Pokud se t\u00fd\u010de jeho aktivit ve V\u00fdchodn\u00edm bloku, vedl z\u00e1pas o "pokus u\u010dinit socialismus lep\u0161\u00edm socialismem". Tyto z\u00e1pasy neprob\u011bhly tiskem. Jinak titulky v Moskv\u011b mohly zn\u00edt "Dean Reed hroz\u00ed zru\u0161it v\u0161echna p\u0159edstaven\u00ed v SSSR, pokud mu nebude dovoleno zp\u00edvat ‚My Yiddisha Mama‘ (\u017didovsk\u00e1 m\u00e1ma) a ‚Hawa Nagila‘ na koncertech" a on zv\u00edt\u011bzil v tomto z\u00e1pase. Nebo v Praze mohli byste vid\u011bt titulek "Dean Reed odhaluje hudebn\u00ed \u00faplatky a \u00faplatky, kter\u00e9 CZ um\u011blci mus\u00ed platit za vycestov\u00e1n\u00ed", a tuto bitvu prohr\u00e1l a byla mu zak\u00e1zana v CZ p\u0159edstaven\u00ed na 3 roky. B\u011bhem jeho posledn\u00edch let v NDR rozhoupal \u017eidle n\u011bkter\u00fdch vysoce postaven\u00fdch ve\u0159ejn\u00fdch \u010dinitel\u016f.
